“Themistoklis”
Who was the historical “Themistoklis”?
From 524–459 BC he was an Athenian politician and general. He was a non-aristocratic politician who rose to prominence in the early years of the Athenian democracy. As a politician, Themistoklis was a populist, having the support of lower-class Athenians, and generally being at odds with the Athenian nobility. Elected ruler in 493 BC, he convinced the city to increase the naval power of Athens, a recurring theme in his political career. During the first Persian invasion of Greece, he fought at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, and may have been one of the ten Athenian generals in that battle. In the years after Marathon, and in the run-up to the second Persian invasion of 480–479 BC, Themistoklis became the most prominent politician in Athens. He continued to advocate for a strong Athenian navy, and in 483 BC he persuaded the Athenians to build a fleet of 200 triremes ships; these proved crucial in the forthcoming conflict with Persia. During the second invasion, he commanded the Greek allied navy at the battles of Artemisium and Salamis in 480 BC. Due to his intrigue, the Allies successfully lured the Persian fleet into the Straits of Salamis, and the decisive Greek victory there was the turning point of the war. The invasion was conclusively repulsed the following year after the Persian defeat at the land Battle of Plataea.
After the conflict ended, Themistoklis continued his pre-eminence among Athenian politicians. However, he aroused the hostility of Sparta by ordering the re-fortification of Athens. A move counter to Spartan and Persian regional interests, usurpers initated a casus belli; his fore-bearer detractors amassing, and the democratic circle declared corrupted without a singular authoritarian overseeing to cleanse the adjudication of maligned authority. In 472 or 471 BC, he was ostracised, and went into exile in Argos. Themistoklis thus fled from southern Greece.
Alexander I of Macedon 498–454 BC temporarily gave him sanctuary at Pydna before he traveled to Asia Minor, where he entered the service of the Persian king in 465–424 BC. He was made governor of Magnesia, and lived there for the rest of his life.
Themistoklis died in 459 BC, probably of natural causes. His reputation was posthumously rehabilitated, and he was re-established as a hero of the Athenian and indeed Hellenic cause. Themistoklis can still reasonably be thought of as “the man most instrumental in achieving the salvation of “Hellas”- Greece from the Persian threat, as Plutarch describes him. His naval policies would have a lasting impact on Athens as well, since maritime power became the cornerstone of the Athenian Empire and golden age. Thucydides assessed Themistoklis as “a man who exhibited the most indubitable signs of genius; indeed, he has claimed our admiration as quite an extraordinary and unparalleled leader”.

Who was 😇Saint Themistoklis😇?
On December 21, the Orthodox Christian church commemorates the Holy Martyr Themistoklis, “protector of persecuted Christians”.
The holy martyr Themistoklis lived in the city of Myra of Lycia in Asia Minor during the reign of the persecutor of Christians, Decius 249-251AD.
Saint Themistoklis…
was a shepherd. During the persecution he concealed within his home a certain Christian named Dioskoridis, while he himself went out to the pursuers. They tortured him cruelly, and he received a martyr’s crown for Christ in the year 251AD.
St. Themistoklis was born in Myra of Lycia in the 3rd century AD. He was a shepherd in trade and a fervent Christian full of goodness. In the mid 3rd century AD emperor Decius began a great persecution against Christians. The leader of Lycia then was Asclepius. His soldiers were searching for Christians of the area and led them to the Asclepius to put them on trial. One of those Christians was Dioscoridis. In 250AD the soldiers of Asclepios pursued Dioscoridis who fled to the mountain where St. Themistoklis was herding his sheep. He sought from help from the Saint, who naturally hid Dioscoridis from his pursuers. At one point the soldiers arrived there and asked St. Themistoklis if he had seen the “fugitive”. The Saint told them to stop pursuing Dioscoridis and to grant him life. They told him that unless he would reveal what he knew, they would take him. And this is what happened: The Saint was led to Asclepius’ court where he amazed those who were standing near with the goodness of his word and the wisdom of his responses. Asclepius ordered him to give up Dioscoridis that he save his life and be saved from tortures which he would face. St. Themistoklis, fervent Christian that he was, responded that it did not matter if they tortured or killed him. He responded that it would be his joy to witness for his faith in Jesus Christ.
Asclepius ordered them to torture the Saint and deliver him to the executioners. They stretched the Saint’s limbs and beat him in the stomach where his internal organs were. They continued to hang him from a tree in order to flay him with iron claws. The Saint from the tree said to Asclepius that on the tree (in other words the Cross) Jesus Christ was glorified and saved the world from its sins. Asclepius then ordered the death of Saint Themistoklis who was led by the executioners outside of the city where he was finally martyred. He was thrown onto bushes with thorns and there delivered his soul to the Creator.
The Christians of the city buried the body of Saint Themistoklis and planted his shepherd’s staff that he had as a shepherd, next to his grave. This staff, in a miraculous manner, sprouted and became an almond tree. For many years after the death of the Saint, the almonds healed the sick.
